On Monday, December 18, 2023, the Montgomery Police Department concluded a round of tobacco compliance checks at tobacco-selling businesses throughout the Village. The compliance checks ensure businesses vending tobacco do not sell to anyone under 21.
Of the 18 businesses checked, only one failed the compliance check. The Montgomery Police Department contacted the establishment and the clerk who authorized the sale and cited the business for selling tobacco to a minor.

Chief Phil Smith said, "While we are disappointed to find one failed compliance check, we are grateful for the other tobacco-selling establishments who refused to sell to underaged buyers. We will continue conducting random compliance checks to ensure our local establishments follow the law."
The businesses checked include those within the Village of Montgomery's jurisdiction. The Montgomery Police Department reminds the community that all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
