The Village of Montgomery proudly announced the recipients of its inaugural Employee Awards Program, a new peer-nominated initiative recognizing outstanding employees whose work reflects the Village's strategic priorities and core values.

The awards program includes three honors—Impact Award, Innovation Award, and Core Values Champion Award—each aligned with the Village's commitment to community engagement, cooperation and collaboration, customer service, equality and inclusion, integrity, and professionalism. This marks the first time the Village has formally recognized employees through a peer-driven awards program.

"The nominations we received reflect the dedication, talent, and heart of our staff," said Village Administrator Jeff Zoephel. "Reviewing these submissions was truly a privilege. While we are celebrating three outstanding winners, every nominee should be proud of the respect and appreciation they have earned from their colleagues."

Three employees were recognized during the Village Board meeting on Monday, January 26. In total, approximately 20 peer nominations were received. The recognized winners were:

Impact Award – Commander Ismael Diaz

Commander Ismael Diaz was recognized for his significant impact on both the Montgomery Police Department and the broader community. Through his leadership and commitment to mentorship, Commander Diaz has created meaningful internship and educational opportunities, welcoming students into the department to gain real-world experience across multiple divisions. Many participants have gone on to pursue careers in public service, including with Montgomery and other local agencies.

Innovation Award – Social Worker Erica Lopez

Erica Lopez received the Innovation Award for her visionary work in building and expanding the Police Social Work Program. In just over two years, she has developed forward-thinking initiatives that support residents, employees, and community partners, including the creation of MPOWER (Montgomery Providing Outreach Wellness, Empowerment, and Resilience). Her ability to develop impactful programs with limited resources exemplifies creativity, initiative, and a deep commitment to service.

Core Values Champion Award – Clara Martinez

The Core Values Champion Award was presented to Clara Martinez, who was nominated multiple times by colleagues across departments. As the welcoming face of Village Hall, Clara consistently demonstrates integrity, inclusion, and professionalism. Fluent in both English and Spanish, she plays a vital role in serving residents and business owners, often going above and beyond her responsibilities to support departments and ensure residents feel heard, respected, and supported.

"This program reinforces the culture we are building—one where employees support one another, live our values, and take pride in serving Montgomery," said Zoephel. "We are excited to continue this tradition of recognition in the years ahead."

On Friday, December 12, Village Board members and staff gathered alongside Marilyn Michelini, her family, and close friends to officially designate Marilyn Michelini Way, honoring Montgomery's first female Village President and a trailblazing leader who served three consecutive terms from 2000 to 2012.

This commemorative street naming recognizes Marilyn Michelini's lasting impact on the Village of Montgomery and her steadfast commitment to public service, leadership, and community progress. During her 12 years as Village President, Michelini guided the Village through a significant period of growth and change, helping to establish a strong foundation for future development while championing transparent governance and resident engagement.

"Her three terms as Village President were some of the most exciting times in the Village," said Village Administrator Jeff Zoephel, who began his service as Director of Finance one month before Michelini took office. "When Marilyn started her years of service, Montgomery had approximately 5,500 residents, none living west of Orchard Road. When she completed her service, the population had grown to more than 15,000, with more residents living west of Orchard Road than east."

As the first woman to serve as Village President, Michelini paved the way for greater representation in local government and demonstrated the importance of inclusive leadership. Her tenure reflected a balanced focus on both residential and commercial growth, including playing a key role in bringing Sam's Club to the community. She also served during the construction of the current Village Hall and Police Department buildings, ensuring the Village's infrastructure kept pace with its growing population and staff.

A strong commitment to community values, thoughtful decision-making, and a deep dedication to Montgomery residents defined Michelini's leadership. The Village of Montgomery is honored to have the opportunity to partake in this living legacy. The board voted unanimously on November 10, 2025, to approve the street naming following the application and request by her children.
